A kitchen is the one part of a Goan home where the climate is not a styling question but an engineering one. Coastal humidity gets into carcass board, hinges and hardware, and a kitchen specified the way you would specify it in Pune will not last the same number of years here.
So this guide does two things: names the five suppliers actually worth visiting, and sets out the kitchen layouts and build types you will be asked to choose between — because that vocabulary is where most first conversations stall.

Before the showroom visit, it helps to know which shape you are buying. These are the six layouts Goan suppliers actually quote for:
- Straight / single-wallAll units along one wall. The most compact and the cheapest to build. Suits apartments, studios and second homes where the kitchen is part of the living space.
- L-shapedTwo adjoining walls. Maximises corner space and gives a natural work triangle. The most commonly specified layout for small-to-medium Goan homes.
- U-shapedThree walls. The most generous countertop area, with distinct zones for prep, cooking and cleaning. Needs the floor area to justify it.
- Parallel / galleyTwo facing runs with a corridor between. Efficient in narrow rooms and popular in older Goan houses where the kitchen is a long, thin space.
- IslandA freestanding block adding worktop, storage and often the hob or sink. Wants a large open-plan room — and, in Goa, works well with the open-to-verandah plans villas favour.
- Peninsula / openAn island attached at one end, or a run that opens into the living area. Gives the sociable feel of an island without needing clearance on all four sides.
You will also be asked to choose between fully modular — factory-built cabinets on standard modules, faster to install and easier to replace — and semi-modular, where a masonry or civil base is built on site and modular shutters and accessories are fitted over it. Semi-modular is usually cheaper and copes well with irregular older Goan rooms; fully modular gives a cleaner finish and a warranty on the whole unit.

Specifying a kitchen for Goa’s climate
