Launch briefing · India · Updated 1 September 2026

ChatGPT now shows ads in India. Sponsored results appear below ChatGPT’s answer — never inside it — for logged-in adults aged 18+ on the Free and Go (₹399/month) tiers. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise/Education remain ad-free. A self-serve Ads Manager opens on 4 September 2026, with campaigns starting from roughly ₹725 per day and no agency required.

For a decade, buying attention in India meant buying a position in a list of links. That model assumed a user who scans ten blue results, clicks two and ignores the rest. ChatGPT breaks the assumption. It returns one answer, and people read it — in full, most of the time.

OpenAI has now placed advertising inside that moment. This briefing covers what actually changed, who sees the ads, what brands can and cannot do, and how to think about it if you are planning media in India.

What are ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT Ads are sponsored placements shown beneath a ChatGPT response, clearly labelled “Sponsored” and visually separated from the answer itself. They appear only when commercially relevant to what was asked — a question about marathon training might surface a running-shoe brand; a question about a tax deadline generally will not surface anything at all.

The critical design decision is that the ad sits after the answer. OpenAI is not selling influence over what ChatGPT says. It is selling the space immediately after ChatGPT has said it.

Why India, and why now?

100M+

Weekly active ChatGPT users in India — the platform’s second-largest market worldwide, with usage roughly doubling year on year between February 2025 and February 2026.

Figures as stated in OpenAI’s India rollout communications, September 2026.

That is a user base too large, and too engaged, to leave unmonetised. The commercial pressure is visible in OpenAI’s own numbers: for the June 2026 quarter the company reported roughly $6.7 billion in revenue against a $12.3 billion operating loss, having confidentially filed for a potential public listing in June 2026. Advertising revenue helps fund the cheaper access tiers — which is precisely why the ad-supported tiers are Free and Go, and the paid tiers stay clean.

Who sees ads, and who does not

  • Sees adsFree tier — the default experience for most Indian users.
    Go — ₹399/month — the low-cost paid tier.
Restricted to logged-in adults, age 18+.
  • Ad-freePlus
    Pro
    Business
    Enterprise / Education
Paying and institutional users are not part of the ad inventory.

The split matters for targeting. If your audience is senior enterprise decision-makers on Business or Enterprise seats, they are structurally unreachable through this channel. If your audience is the broad Indian consumer or the early-career professional on Free or Go, this is a genuinely new inventory pool.

What ChatGPT ads cannot do

OpenAI has published three guardrails, and they are worth understanding precisely — both because they constrain what you can buy, and because they are the answer to the privacy question your clients will ask.

  • Ads cannot shape the answerAdvertising never influences what ChatGPT actually tells a user. Paying does not buy a recommendation — it buys placement beneath one.
  • Ads cannot read your chatsAdvertisers get no access to conversations, chat history or saved memories.
  • Ads cannot sell your dataReporting stays aggregate. Nothing personally identifiable is passed to the advertiser.

How is this different from Google Ads?

The difference is not the format. It is the state of attention you are buying into.

  • Traditional searchA list of links. Skimmed, mostly ignored. The user is still deciding where to look, and attention is split across ten competing results.
  • ChatGPT conversationOne direct answer, read in full. The user has already articulated intent in a full sentence and is receiving a considered response.

OpenAI frames the behaviour plainly: Indian users come to ChatGPT to learn, build and discover. Those are high-context moments — a user mid-way through a decision, having explained their situation in their own words. A brand appearing there is not interrupting a scroll. It is arriving at the end of a question.

The practical consequence for planners: query volume will be lower than search, but qualification will be higher. Judge early campaigns on cost per qualified action, not impressions.

How to advertise on ChatGPT in India

From 4 September 2026, the self-serve Ads Manager is open to anyone — no agency, no minimum spend commitment, no managed-account gatekeeping. Campaigns start from roughly ₹725 per day.

You set a campaign goal from four options: lead generation, sales, app installs or sign-ups. That list tells you what the platform is optimised for today. There is no brand-awareness or reach objective in the initial set — this is a performance channel at launch, and should be budgeted as one.

What brands in India should do first

  • Work out whether your buyer is on an ad-supported tierFree and Go only. Consumer, D2C and early-career professional audiences qualify. Enterprise buyers on Business or Enterprise seats do not.
  • Map the questions, not the keywordsPeople type full sentences into ChatGPT, not two-word queries. Your targeting thinking should start from the questions a customer asks before buying — which is the same research that powers answer-engine optimisation.
  • Test at low daily budgets while the auction is thinRoughly 50 brands were live in week one. Competition for this inventory will not stay this low, and early cost-per-action data is worth more than the spend it costs to get it.
  • Fix the destination before you buy the clickA high-intent user arriving from a considered answer will judge your landing page harshly. Message match matters more here than in interruptive channels.
  • Do not neglect being cited in the answer itselfAds sit below the response. Being referenced inside it is a separate discipline — and it cannot be bought.

The part you cannot buy

This is the strategic point most launch coverage misses. ChatGPT Ads let you rent space beneath the answer. They do not get your brand into the answer.

Being named in the response itself is earned through the same work that has always driven organic visibility — clear, structured, genuinely useful content that answer engines can parse, attribute and quote. That is the discipline now being called AEO (answer engine optimisation) and GEO (generative engine optimisation), and it runs on a different clock to a media buy: slower to build, but not switched off when the budget stops.

The brands that will win the conversational surface in India are the ones doing both — buying the placement below the answer while earning the mention inside it.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT have ads in India?

Yes. As of September 2026, ChatGPT shows sponsored placements to users in India on the Free and Go tiers. Ads appear below the answer, are labelled “Sponsored”, and are shown only to logged-in adults aged 18 and over.

How much does it cost to advertise on ChatGPT in India?

Campaigns start from approximately ₹725 per day through the self-serve Ads Manager, which opened on 4 September 2026. There is no agency requirement and no large minimum commitment at launch.

Which ChatGPT plans show ads?

The Free tier and the Go tier (₹399 per month) show ads. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise/Education plans remain completely ad-free.

Can advertisers change what ChatGPT recommends?

No. OpenAI states that ads never influence the content of a ChatGPT answer. Advertising buys placement beneath the response, not influence over it. Advertisers also cannot access conversations, chat history or saved memories, and reporting is aggregate only.

What campaign objectives can you run on ChatGPT Ads?

Four at launch: lead generation, sales, app installs and sign-ups. There is no dedicated brand-awareness or reach objective yet, so ChatGPT Ads should be planned as a performance channel rather than an upper-funnel one.

Where do ChatGPT ads appear in the conversation?

Below the completed answer, in a visually separated block marked “Sponsored”. Ads are never placed inside the response text, and are shown only when commercially relevant to the question asked.

Is ChatGPT advertising better than Google Ads for Indian brands?

They serve different moments rather than replacing one another. Search delivers a list of links that users skim; ChatGPT delivers one answer that users read in full, after stating their intent in a complete sentence. Expect lower volume and higher qualification on ChatGPT, and judge it on cost per qualified action rather than impressions.

The auction for attention just moved into your chatbot

Your next high-intent customer may be typing a question into ChatGPT right now rather than searching Google. ONEDIGITAL plans conversational advertising alongside the AEO and GEO work that earns a mention inside the answer — for brands in architecture, interiors, real estate, hospitality and luxury.
